Look out for... Spotted Flycatcher

20 Jun 2018 Spotted Flycatcher by Colin Dalton

Spotted Flycatcher is one of the last of the breeding species to return to breeding sites, with most birds not back until mid to late May. They can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including broadleaf woodland, parks and gardens. A distinctive habit is that it will use a prominent perch to scan for insects, which it catches in flight.

The population of Spotted Flycatcher has been undergoing a widespread decline throughout Britain and Ireland, though there have been recent upturns in their fortunes in Scotland. One of the identified causes being low nest and nestling survival.
