Photo Competition

As part of our 90th anniversary celebrations, we launched an exclusive Members’ Photo Competition. The winning and highly commended photos have been chosen, and can be seen in the 2023 autumn edition of BTO News. A selection of these beautiful photos will also feature in the 2024 BTO calendar, which is available from the BTO Shop.

The judging panel looked for high-quality images of British bird species that reflect BTO’s values and our areas of work, for each of the following categories:

  • A Star is Born: A portrait which will feature on the cover of BTO News.
  • The Usual Suspects: Species which are easily seen day to day, perhaps in the garden.
  • City Slickers: Species in an urban environment.
  • Fisherman’s Friends: Species usually found around the coast, out to sea or on rivers or wetlands.
  • The Social Network: More than one bird; may be a small group or a large flock of birds.
  • The Big Country: Species in the highlands, lowlands, farmland or woodland.

Members aged 18 and under were judged separately for all categories, with the exception of ‘A Star is Born’.
