Rose-coloured Starlings on the move

20 Jun 2018 Rose-coloured Starling by Sonia Johnston

Since mid May, there have been reports from eastern Europe of large numbers of Rose-coloured Starlings on the move. Several hundred birds have been logged in Hungary, and more recently, large flocks have also been noted in Italy and southern France.

The causes of such irruptions of Rose-coloured Starlings outside of their normal breeding range in Asia and far eastern Europe are not yet fully understood, but appear to be linked to changes in the population of locusts on which it feeds. So far, there have been records at sites in both Britain and Ireland so it is worth keeping an eye out for this rare visitor in the coming weeks.
