Shelducks on the move

05 Jul 2017 Shelduck by Clive Brown

Shelduck are a familiar feature of estuaries and other coastal sites in northwestern Europe. The species has a fascinating breeding biology, and is the only waterbird in the region to regularly nest in burrows. Parents can be seen with chicks from late May onwards.

In July, the majority of the adults leave for moulting sites in the eastern North Sea. Up to 300,000 birds from across Europe gather here until September. This moult migration is reflected on the reporting rate on BirdTrack, with a noticeable dip in late summer.
