Birds on the move this month

14 Aug 2017 Terns and gulls by Stuart Gillies

August is one of the most exciting months for bird migration, especially if you are birding near coastal areas. Offshore, shearwaters and other seabirds are on the move, and it is a good time to look for rarer species such as Balearic and Sooty Shearwaters.

Inshore, numbers of terns, such as Sandwich Tern, are also starting to build at roost sites, and there is a good chance a skua or two will be attracted to flocks of feeding terns. Waders continue to arrive from their Arctic breeding grounds, with Dunlin and Spotted Redshank reaching their peak reporting rates this month.
