At the start of 2010 the Kingfisher reporting rate was at a 3-year low and there were concerns that the cold weather had decimated the population. The reporting rate quickly returned to normal though and in the last few weeks, it has begun to climb as it did in previous years, perhaps through the birds becoming more conspicuous as adults feed recently-fledged young. The results of this year's Breeding Bird Survey will need to be analysed before the effect of last winter can really be determined but its great to see that Kingfishers are now being encountered more frequently again, just like in previous years.
