Look out for... Great White Egret

07 Jan 2019 Great White Egret by Jeff and Allison Kew/BTO

Similar in appearance to Little Egret, but at almost twice the size, Great White Egrets are an unmistakable presence wherever they appear. The population of Great White Egret has increased significantly in Britain in the last twenty years, and is now a regular sight at many wetlands, though it remains scarce in Ireland and Scotland.

The increase in population is reflected in the consistently above average reporting rate in recent years. Though the reporting rate of Great White Egret tends to peak in early winter, now is still a good time to look for this species, especially if there is a colder spell that forces birds to move from favoured sites.
