Record flock of Cattle Egrets

13 Sep 2018 Cattle Egret by Jeff and Allison Kew/BTO

Formerly a very rare vagrant, Cattle Egret has become a more regular sight in recent years following several large influxes. The first in 2007 saw over 200 arriving throughout Britain and Ireland, and resulted in successful breeding in the Somerset Levels the following year.

A second large influx in 2016 brought even larger numbers to our shores, with a further successful breeding attempt at Burton Mere, Cheshire last year. Numbers of Cattle Egrets have continued to build over the summer months this year, culminating in a record flock of 51 birds in the South Huish Marsh, Devon and the BirdTrack reporting rate reaching over 1% of all submitted complete lists.
