Good summer for Little Terns

10 Nov 2017 Little Tern by Tony Davison

Preferring to nest in loose colonies on sand and shingle beaches, Little Terns are one of the most threatened seabirds breeding in Britain and Ireland, with an estimated 1,900 pairs. Given the exposed nature of their breeding sites, they face a range of threats, including accidental disturbance and predation by mammals and birds.

Two colonies in Britain and Ireland reported a successful breeding season, with an estimated 220 chicks at the colony in Kilcoole, Ireland. 161 pairs of Little Tern raised 202 chicks in the colony at Gronant, north Wales. Sadly it was not all good news, with the important colony at Kessingland, Suffolk suffering from human disturbance.
