Written by Julian Fitter, familiar to many as author of many British field guides, it covers everything from lichens and fungi, through plants, the seashore, invertebrates and the vertebrates: amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The book also gives an overview of New Zealand, its habitats and issues facing its wildlife. Each species is illustrated with a photograph, and information is given on status, range and identification.
