Two-part BTO online training on Assessing Risk of Groundworks to Breeding Birds

This training involves two online sessions of about 2 hours, with a trainer:participant ratio of 1:15. Participants will be encouraged to take part in various activities to support learning, and there will be opportunities to ask questions and discuss different scenarios.

A field session will take place at the Nunnery Lakes reserve in Thetford between the two online sessions – if you haven't already done so, please let us know if you want to book for the field session too.

Both online sessions will be recorded so you can catch up with any elements you miss if you are unable to attend.

The two online sessions will cover the following topics:

ONLINE SESSION 1: Tuesday 20 February, 9:30–11:30am

  • Bird identification by sight and sound
  • Bird breeding biology and its implications
  • Data and recording

ONLINE SESSION 2: Friday 23 February, 9:30–11:30am

  • Field Session follow-up
  • Legislation
  • Conservation status and other considerations
  • Applying principles
  • Discovering active nests during groundworks

The training will be run by BTO staff Nick Moran and Jenny Donelan, both experienced birdwatchers, surveyors and trainers.
