Join our Youth Representative Kate to see the fantastic bird life that can be found at Spurn!
Join us for a wildlife walk around Spurn to experience the autumn migration spectacle at its finest!
Our Youth Representative and Spurn Bird Observatory Volunteers will take you on a walk exploring the nature of Spurn. They'll help you learn to identify local species of bird by sound, and highlight their personal tips and tricks. You will also get the chance to learn about and experience the important monitoring work of Bird Observatories.
There will be a circular walk around the Observatory’s recording area, taking in a mix of habitat including farmland, scrub and wetlands. During the walk we will stop off at the Bird Ringing Lab in the hope of seeing some Bird Ringing. We will also do our own point count survey activity and practice counting birds.
This is a great chance to experience autumn Spurn birding at its best, as hundreds of birds undertake their autumn migrations and are funnelled through Spurn on their way. Early November is the perfect time to see big numbers of Thrushes, Robins and Goldcrests arriving from the continent. Plus there’s always the chance that something special might turn up too!
Come prepared for any weather in appropriate clothing (no shorts – it's tick season!) and footwear, and bring some water and lunch. Don't forget a hat and sun cream. There is an option to buy a drink and food at the cafe. The walk will start and finish at the Spurn Bird Observatory car park. To make the event accessible by public transport, there will be an option to be collected from the Patrington War Memorial bus stop and dropped off there after the event.
Please note that this event is open to under 25-year-olds only, with a focus on 11–24-year-olds. Participants under 18 will need to fill in a consent form with their parent(s)/carer(s) and send this to BTO before the event.
