Joe still in the Congo

14 Feb 2025

At this present time, old-timer Joe remains in his wintering grounds in the dense rainforests on the northern edge of the vast Busira River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He was in the same region at this time last year, but had started to move north by the end of the month – will he repeat this move? Tagged in Norfolk in summer 2022, this will be the third spring that we may track his movements north!

Cleeve clings on

14 Feb 2025

Cleeve has spent the last few weeks in a heavily forested region in the southern part of the Republic of the Congo.

He is just west of the Lefini Reserve, a protected area which is home to an array of wildlife including Western Lowland Gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants and more than 260 bird species.

Wilfrid's 9,000km journey ends!

05 Nov 2024

Of all our tagged Cuckoos, Wilfrid is the bird who has gone furthest south at this time, and he is currently in north-west Angola, close to the mouth of the mighty Congo River.

He has travelled in excess of 9,000 km (5,592 miles) since leaving his Suffolk breeding grounds in July!

Sayaan reaches the finish line

05 Nov 2024

Sayaan, along with Cuckoos Joe and KP, is now in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is exploring the lush forests by the Maringa River, just 146 km (90 miles) to the north-east of Cuckoo KP.

This is the same region where he spent his last winter, and he'll likely stay here until he gets the urge to move north again in late February.

Joe keeps good time

05 Nov 2024

Joe is now in much the same area as he was at this time last year.

He is currently close to Busira River, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 142 km (88 miles) east of Lake Tumba, a Ramsar designated Wetland of International Importance.

Cleeve's in the Congo

05 Nov 2024

Having crossed the Sahara in early August, Cleeve has been moving slowly south and is now by the Bouenza River in the Republic of the Congo.

Cleeve had a taste of fame when he was the star of a BBC One Show episode back in May. Hannah Stitfall and crew joined our BTO team in Norfolk as they caught Cleeve and attached his satellite tag.

Cores heads to the Congo

05 Nov 2024

Cuach Cores crossed the Sahara much earlier this year, arriving south of the desert region by early August. In 2023, he’d lingered in Europe until 10 October.

He is currently in the Central African Republic from where he will likely move into the Congo basin, given his movements last year.

Wilfrid winds eastwards

19 Aug 2024

After fuelling up and resting in West Africa, Wilfrid has moved eastwards, passing through Mali and into Burkina Faso.

In the past few days he has continued on into southern Niger, and our latest signal show him currently on the border with north-west Nigeria. He is just to the north of the Gagere River, approximately 100 km (62 miles) from the city of Maradi.

Cleeve explores Nigeria

13 Aug 2024

In recent days Cleeve has moved further into north-east Nigeria and is currently in the forested savannah area to the west of Erwa Nature Reserve.

Wilfrid gets tropical

06 Aug 2024

Wilfrid is slowly making his way toward the Guinea border.

He has spent the past couple of days in the wooded savannah and arid forests close to the Niokolo-Koba National Park, a World Heritage Site and home to Lions, Chimpanzees, Hippos and around 330 bird species.
