Birds of New Zealand : a Photographic Guide

Several New Zealand bird taxa were elevated to species level in OSNZ’s 2010 checklist, though not all these decisions are reflected in the various global listings of bird species. Thus obscure gems such as Okarito Brown Kiwi, Kermadec Storm Petrel, Sub-Antarctic Diving-petrel and Snowy, Salvin’s and Antipodean Albatrosses have been relatively poorly documented for birders.  This new photographic guide provides full field identification characters for all NZ birds, including these, as well as the rare visitors to NZ and the many non-native landbirds that are now considered established there. Its well-focused text, clear distribution map and generous selection of top-class photos will enable even the novice NZ birder to identify birds confidently and help them maximise a trip or life list. Though Fitter & Merton’s 2011 paperback is more easily portable, I would have packed Scofield & Stephenson for my recent visit – had it been available! Its smartphone app is also an attractive option.
