A Bird Observatory is Born: the edited Diaries of the Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory 1953 to 1955
This intriguing little book transcribes the handwritten daily logs kept by the first volunteers, visitors and wardens at the Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory, between the years of 1953 and 1955. In an amazing link with the past, the great, great, great grandmother of the author of this book was actually born on Bardsey Island in the late 1780’s.
The introductory extracts from the first Bardsey Observatory Report in 1953, from Ronald Lockley and William Condry, summarise the first year of the Observatory’s existence. The remainder of this well-illustrated book constitutes the log entries between 1953 and 1955, recording the ins and outs of day-to-day island life, including bird sightings and ringing activity, as well as the gradual evolution of the Observatory. It is fascinating to note that in the last 60 years or so, very little has changed apart from a few mod cons.
For those of you who have visited the wonderful island of Bardsey, this book gives a great insight into the origin of the Observatory that we know and love. And for those of you who have yet to visit, hopefully it will inspire you to go and experience the island for yourself.
