Recording an empty box

Recording an empty box

If you've been keeping an eye on a nest box and it hasn't been used by birds all season, you might think you have nothing to report to Nesting Neighbours. But in fact, we need to know about empty boxes just as much as occupied ones. Unless we have information on both, we can't find out how often nest boxes are used by birds. If we don't receive updates about a nest box, we can't tell whether it was empty all season or simply not watched. Therefore, even when you watch/inspect your nest box and find it empty, please login to Nesting Neighbours and let us know.

To report that your box is empty at any time, please follow these instructions:

  1. Log in to Nesting Neighbours
  2. Select ‘start new nest record’ from the options
  3. If it is a new location see 'entering a new record in a new location'
  4. Add a new nest box or select an existing nest box from the drop down
  5. Select species ‘Unknown species’
  6. In the nest visit section enter the date you inspected the box and select status code ‘SN’ for nest box unoccupied (in the 'other outcome' section of the dropdown)
  7. Select ‘Save nest record’
  8. This record is now complete and if an update is required at a later date in the year it can be edited in the ‘Edit/review nest records’ section
