The Nature of Wyre: a Wildlife-Rich Forest in the Heart of Britain

Every so often a local natural history is published that surpasses the usual standards of that genre: this is such a book. The writing style is clear and delightful – the editors have performed an amazing task as there have been more than 25 authors associated with the 15 chapters of the book, such that each chapter runs seamlessly from one to the other.

The book is adorned with excellent photographs depicting the landscape and Wyre’s inhabitants from the largest trees to the smallest invertebrates. The Wyre Forest area covers about 75 km2 , is situated on the borders of Worcestershire and Shropshire and lies to the west of Bewdley on the River Severn. Much of the area is forested and statutorily protected and remains one of the largest and thus most important forests in central England. Introductory chapters cover landscape and history, others cover the plants, and two chapters cover the invertebrates, whilst four chapters cover the vertebrates including one devoted to birds. The bird chapter is thorough dealing with groups like woodland birds, waterbirds and raptors. Mention is made of Edgar Chance who made pioneering studies of Cuckoos in Wyre nearly 100 years ago. Wyre Forest holds a number of rare invertebrates like the Land Caddis and unusual plants like the True Service-tree.

The Wyre Forest Study Group was formed in 1991 and it is thanks to its members that this book could be produced; citizen scientists who have worked tirelessly to gain an understanding of this unique and wonderful woodland.
