An event aimed at young people in Shropshire considering a career in conservation, from practical reserve management through careers as ecologists or public engagement in zoos.

In this session, we will be joined by special guests Hannah Stone, Kirsty Martuccio, Lottie Glover and Martyn Owen, who all work in the conservation sector. Each guest will give a short talk about their experience, followed by an opportunity to ask them your questions via the Zoom chat box.

This event is a collaboration between BTO Shropshire and the Shropshire Ornithological Society. Find out more about each of our speakers below:

Hannah Stone - Zoo/Zoo Education Manager at Reaseheath College

“I will be speaking about my career path, how my passion for animals and wildlife has taken over my life and how I have ended up managing a zoo! As well as tips and hints into how to get the experience you need to follow a career in a very competitive industry.”

Kirsty Martuccio - RSPB Volunteer and Community Development Officer for the Vibrant Vyrnwy

“I’ll be talking about how I had dived into the conservation career probably at a later stage than most, and went to university to pursue this in my 30s. I’ll also give a brief about the Vibrant Vyrnwy project and types of things we have been up to, with a particular focus to our Agricultural Training Programme which has been a huge success. By the evening of the Zoom event we will have new trainees beginning the second placement.”

Lottie Glover - Conservation Officer at Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and Chair of the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Bird Group

“I’ve worked for various organisations such as the RSPB and the Wildlife Trust. It took a lot of patience, hard work and resilience to get where I am. I want to share my experiences and advice to help others who want to get a career in conservation as it’s worthwhile when you get there.”

Martyn Owen - Director and Principal Ornithologist/Ecologist

“I have worked as a professional ecological consultant since 2006, for both small and large consultancies in Shropshire. Using the experience gained I formed BiOME Consulting in 2014, a consultancy specialising in ornithology although covering all aspects of ecological consultancy. BiOME now employs nine full time employees and operates across a wide variety of projects, for clients in the private and public sector in the UK and beyond.”

Martyn is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, licensed bat and Great Crested Newt worker and holds Schedule 1 survey licences for a variety of bird species in England, Scotland and Wales.
