Infectious Diseases of Wild Mammals and Birds in Europe
The book provides an overview of viral, bacterial and fungal agents causing infectious diseases in European mammals and birds and it is divided into chapters summarised in four sections: 1) viral infections (which includes Herpesvirus, Influenza virus, and Lyssavirus); 2) bacterial infections (including Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp. and Mycobacteria spp. infections); 3) fungal and yeast infections (including Aspergillosis) and 4) prion infections (transmissible spongiform encephalopathies). Each chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, pathogenesis-pathogenesis and pathology, clinical signs (and treatment if applicable), diagnosis, management and control, as well as public health concerns of each group of pathogens, illustrated with clear photos, maps and diagrams. Eight useful appendices provide a list of some wildlife-related emerging diseases in Europe, a selection of pathogens with European wildlife reservoirs, a list of pathogens with the potential for socio-economic impact in Europe, wildlife pathogens transmitted by arthropods, pathogenic agents linked to wild population declines or that have had an impact on conservation of species, a species-specific list of wildlife disease in Europe and two lists of diseases by clinical symptoms, one for mammals and one for birds. The book provides a good comprehensive overview of viruses, bacteria, fungal pathogens and prion infections associated with wild mammals and birds in Europe, and it is suitable for anyone who is looking for an introductory text to the subject.
