Overview

This draft report presents updated population estimates for six gull species following the Winter Gull (Roost) Survey (WinGS) which was carried out during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 winters.

In more detail

The Winter Gull (Roost) Survey (WinGS) provides the most comprehensive assessment of wintering gull populations across the United Kingdom, also covering the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Last conducted two decades previously (2003/04–2005/06), the 2023/24–2024/25 survey addresses a substantial evidence gap in our understanding of wintering gull populations. By combining near-census coverage of major roosts with stratified sampling of inland and coastal sites, it delivers robust population estimates at both UK and country scales.

This draft report presents updated estimates for six gull species and evaluates changes over the past two decades, providing critical evidence to inform conservation policy, site designation, and the management of pressures affecting gull populations.
