Aims and scope

Bird Study publishes high-quality papers relevant to field ornithology, especially as it relates to evidence-based bird conservation. 

Research topics

Papers are especially welcome on the following topics: 

  • Patterns of distribution and abundance
  • Movements
  • Habitat preferences
  • Developing field census methods
  • Ringing and other techniques for marking and tracking birds.

Geographical coverage 

Bird Study concentrates on research concerning bird species that occur in the Western Palearctic. This includes research on their biology outside of the Western Palearctic, for example, on wintering grounds in Africa. Bird Study also welcomes papers from any part of the world if they are of general interest to the broad areas of investigation outlined above.

Article types

The following types of articles are published:

  • Original research papers (any length)
  • Short original research papers (less than 2,500 words)
  • Scientific reviews
  • Forum articles covering general ornithological issues, including non-scientific ones

Reprints and back issues

Corresponding authors will receive free online access to a PDF version of their article through the Taylor & Francis website (www.tandfonline.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. PDFs of articles are also published “online early” in advance of the publication of the printed version. In addition authors can also purchase reprints of their article as they appear in the printed version of Bird Study through Rightslink®. These must be ordered when proofs are received.
