Location

This is a FREE training session at the wonderful RSPB Rye Meads reserve which will focus specifically on how to take part in the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), to prepare you, build your confidence and excitement for taking part in this important survey in 2026. Expect to learn more about the methods, results and impact of this key survey.

Please note, to make the most out of this session you need to be able to confidently identify most common garden bird species (e.g. Robin, Wren, Blue Tit, Blackbird) that are likely going to be encountered on a BBS square in Hertfordshire / Essex / North London. This includes identification of these species both by sight and sound (song and call).

We will explain the mechanics of the survey and guide you through a series of mock BBS transect sections. The session will be led by BBS staff (and volunteers where available) who have experience of both taking part and coordinating the survey across the UK. Advanced booking essential. This session is limited to 12 participants.

If you want to know more about how to make your birding count, this is the session for you. We hope to see you there!

Please be advised that parking on site for RSPB members is free, however, there is a small fee of £5 for non-members.
