BTO runs a wide range of bird population monitoring projects*. Volunteers participate in many of these projects by recording and sending us data using a web app or mobile app, although not all projects have both types of app. *Projects are also sometimes known as surveys and schemes.
Web app or mobile app?
Volunteers can record and send us data using a web app or a mobile app.
If a volunteer is participating in the Birds in Greenspaces project, for example, they can log in to their account using this web address: https://app.bto.org/birds-in-greenspaces using an internet browser e.g. Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox etc.
Alternatively, volunteers can download the Birds in Greenspaces mobile app onto their phone e.g. from the App Store (for Apple devices) or Google Play (for Android devices), and send us data that way.
- It doesn’t matter which app a volunteer uses—they can even use both and switch between them; all the data ends up in the same place.
MyBTO
Regardless of which type of app a volunteer would like to use, they will always need to create a free MyBTO account first and then register for a project (inside their MyBTO account) before they can record and send us data. Volunteers only need one MyBTO account to take part in any of our projects. Volunteers can also click through to a web app from their MyBTO account and they will automatically be logged in to the web app (and vice versa).
- If you’re interested in volunteering for a project—before you create a MyBTO account or register—please see the project landing pages to find out more about how you can get involved.
Not on the list?
If you can't see an app or project in the lists below, it might be on our Completed projects page e.g. if it is officially closed and/or no longer accepting data from volunteers. Our projects run for different periods of time: some may be one-off, some may be annual or seasonal and others may be permanent and ongoing.

Many BTO projects are more commonly known by their acronyms but we have listed them using the full name to help beginners identify them more easily. Please note: you will need a free MyBTO account in order to log into our web apps (and mobile apps).
