Contrary to popular opinion, and despite being land-locked and densely populated, the Manchester Region boasts a variety of habitats and attracts a wide range of bird species throughout the year. We have around 200 BTO members, plus a similar number of Garden BirdWatch participants, so the region must be one of the most intensively "birded" parts of the country. There are a number of local bird clubs and RSPB groups in the area which organise traditional meetings and field trips. The Greater Manchester Bird Recording Group holds the county's database of birds and produces the annual report "Birds in Greater Manchester". By far the best source of information on birds in the region is the website Manchester Birding (link below) which has pages on BTO surveys. The Wetland Bird Survey in Greater Manchester county is organised by: Tim Wilcox - tim.wilcox0 [at] gmail.com.
