We are funded by donations and membership subscriptions, and through partnerships with government, other NGOs, and commercial bodies. This mix of funding enables us to deliver a wide range of work, benefiting both birds and people, and to address the most pressing questions.
Membership subscriptions
Membership is open to everyone, and financial support from members helps to ensure that we can carry out the research that our members feel is the most important. Find out more about BTO membership.
Donations
People from all over the UK kindly donate thousands of pounds each year to fund our research and monitoring of the UK’s bird populations. Individuals show their support by donating to an appeal, leaving a gift in Will, signing up for regular giving, and raising funds through events and special day giving. Find out more about how you can help.
Our partnership with government
BTO has specific relationships with Government Departments and with the country nature conservation delivery Agencies: Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. These partnerships are set in the context of the BTO/Joint Nature Conservation Committee Partnership Agreement, and enable BTO to be a Government contractor. Find out more about our partnership with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.
Working with business
We regularly undertake contracts for environmental consultancies, and provide advice to developers, currently most notably in the renewable energy and marine sectors, providing a comprehensive range of commercial services. Find out more about this work.
