Have you attended one of our songs and calls training sessions in the last few years but feel a bit rusty? Or maybe you've done lots of learning on your own but would like to boost your confidence in ID'ing birds by ear? Sign up for this training to help you feel ready for the Breeding Bird Survey season!

We will recap the transferable skills that will help with identifying birds by sound, highlight some useful resources and activities that will help you to practise, give you opportunities to practise, and allow you to identify any areas of weakness that you have, with scope within the training format for us to tailor content that you find particularly challenging.
 

The course will be covered across two sessions:

• Session 1 – recap of our suggested approach to identifying birds by sound, with focus on applying ‘Describe–Visualise–Memorise’ to (re)learning songs and calls.
• Homework – we’ll give you opportunities to practise your bird ID by sound, identifying areas you find more difficult.
• Session 2 – this session will be more audience-led and largely based on your responses to the survey sent out in the homework, giving you the chance to gain more confidence in your ID skills ahead of the breeding season. We’ll also cover the use of apps in ID, signpost you to other resources, and address any concerns around methodology, particularly of the Breeding Bird Survey.

Both sessions will be online and last approximately 90 minutes, you’ll receive joining information closer to the time. The sessions will be recorded and a link to the recordings will be sent around after the training.
