Training course fees
Providing a wide range of opportunities for BTO members and volunteers to develop their skills is a high priority for us. All BTO courses for volunteers are subsidised, though as a charity we need to make a charge to help cover the cost of the training programme.
All 1-day Bird ID workshops in 2018 cost £60, which includes teaching, materials and refreshments.
All 2½-day residential courses in 2018 cost £250 and our 4-day courses cost £400, which includes teaching, materials, refreshments and full board and lodgings from an evening meal on the first day to lunch on the final day. A non-resident price is also available for residential courses.
We also organise local, survey-specific training opportunities, often in areas where survey coverage is low. We can sometimes offer these at a lower cost or free of charge, where funding for volunteer training has been secured as part of a particular project. We are also fortunate that many of our survey partner organisations support us by providing venues at low or no charge. If you have ideas of organisations or venues that could support us in this way, please contact the Training Manager – training [at] bto.org.
We offer a course designed for ecological and environmental professionals. If you attend a volunteer course as a professional, you will be liable for a higher charge as we are unable to subsidise your professional training. For more information on charges please contact Anne Cotton – anne.cotton [at] bto.org 01786 466560.
We have a secure online payment facility and we take card payments via telephone if you prefer. Cheques should be made payable to ‘British Trust for Ornithology’.
Book your place today by contacting Anne Cotton – anne.cotton [at] bto.org 01786 466560.
Early booking is recommended – however, if you have left it a bit late it is always worth checking to see if we can squeeze you in. We operate a waiting list if we are fully booked, in case of cancellations or the availability of a second leader/helper.
Booking terms and conditions
Payment must be received, in full, 4 weeks before the course starts. A deposit will confirm a place in the meantime, or payment may be made in full on booking. Cancellations 4 weeks or more before the start date will be reimbursed in full. Cancellations less than 4 weeks from the start date will not be refunded as we will be charged for your place whether you can attend or not.
Travel to and from the venues, and any additional accomodation requirements are the responsibility of the participant. On rare occasions it is unfortunately necessary for BTO or the venue to cancel an event due to low numbers of bookings. If this happens you will be offered a full refund regardless of date of cancellation, or the opportunity to transfer your booking to another date/venue if you wish and places are available. In the event of a course cancellation, BTO will not be liable for any additional costs, such as pre-booked travel tickets or additional accommodation, that you may have incurred.
