BTO monitoring first identified the biodiversity crisis in farmland and research using our datasets has been central both to diagnosing the causes of bird population declines and to evaluating the success of the agri-environment schemes (AESs) that aim to address the problem. These AESs were informed by experimental work that tested the efficacy of management options, while bespoke volunteer surveys offer a unique resource to specific habitats or management approaches at the national scale.
