The BTO Regional Network
For the purposes of managing and achieving good local
survey coverage, the United Kingdon (England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland) has been divided into ca. 125 regions, each one
run by an appointed BTO Regional Organiser. These regions are loosely
based on county boundaries with the national 10km square grid system
used for exact deliniation.
Regional Organisers are volunteers who act and work on behalf of
the BTO. Their main areas of responsibility are:
- Organising and co-ordination of BTO surveys at local level through
the network of BTO members and other volunteer fieldworkers
- Sending out of and retrieval of BTO survey forms to and from
survey volunteers
- First point of contact with BTO members and survey volunteers
- Liaison with local bird clubs or similar groups
- Recruitment of new survey volunteers at local level
- Recruitment of BTO members
- Attendance at local one-day and national BTO conferences
The various censusing methods used and the fieldskills required
vary from survey to survey though most are simple and straightforward.
