Redwing and Fieldfare

19 Oct 2012 Fieldfare by Chris Mills www.norfolkbirding.com

The arrival of wintering thrushes from Scandinavia and eastwards is synonymous with October. The Redwing reporting rate certainly bears this out, having risen rapidly over the last fortnight. Fieldfares usually reach us a week or two later, though they have yet to arrive in numbers this autumn. However, the forecast for high pressure over Scandinavia and an easterly airflow over the next few days ought to provide good conditions for Fieldfares to migrate. The BTO Winter Thrushes Survey is underway; the expected Fieldfare arrival should make the next week or so an ideal time to take part.
