Tawny Owl

09 Dec 2011 Tawny Owl by Margaret Holland

Tawny Owls are very active at the moment, establishing territories and strengthening pair bonds in preparation for egg-laying, which can start as early as February. However the reporting rate barely picks up this increased detectability, presumably because most Tawny Owl records are logged as casual observations, not as part of complete lists (which are used to calculate the reporting rates). BirdTrack Tawny Owl records in 2011 also miss many coastal 10-km squares, perhaps because relatively few birdwatchers are resident in these areas.
