Short-eared Owl and Whooper Swan

21 Oct 2011 Short-eared Owl by John Walton

Mid-October saw an incredible arrival of Short-eared Owls: 18 at Portland, Dorset on 16th and 50 in off the sea at Titchwell RSPB, Norfolk on 13th! Some of the latter quickly moved inland and one even made it to the BTO Nunnery Lakes, where it was a welcome addition for the BTO vs RSPB BirdTrack Challenge. Another goodie at the Nunnery Lakes was a Whooper Swan on 20th. Only a day earlier a team of BTO staff watched small groups of these swans battle through snow and hail squalls on Fair Isle; the reporting rate indicates that these sightings at opposite ends of Britain were part of a wider influx.
