Manx Shearwater

09 Sep 2011 Manx Shearwater by Jim MacKenzie

The strong winds that have been battering the west coasts have resulted in some spectacular seabird number, in particular of the rarer shearwaters. During the week, over 7,000 Sooty, 2,500 Great and 600 Balearic Shearwaters, the latter globally listed as critically endangered, were counted off southwest Cornwall, south Devon and southwest Ireland. Large numbers of Manx Shearwaters were also seen; unfortunately some newly fledged young struggled with the stormy conditions, resulting in 491 being 'wrecked' on Newgale Beach in Pembrokeshire.
