Listen out for... Quail

31 Jul 2018 Quail by Graham Catley/BTO

Owing to their secretive habits, Quail is one of the least studied breeding species in Britain. The population is estimated at around 500 singing males, with important populations in eastern Scotland and East Anglia. However, the population can vary significantly from year to year depending on weather conditions.

As Quail are very skulking in nature, the easiest way to find Quail is to listen out for their song. Song activity is highest in the evening and early morning, but birds may sing throughout the day. The favoured habitats are fields of cereal, such as wheat and barley, as well as grassland. Based on your BirdTrack records, early July is the peak time for Quail so now is a great time to check suitable habitat for this elusive species.
