BTO volunteers help monitor butterflies

 Butterfly numbers fell by almost a quarter last summer, according to the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS), a partnership between Butterfly Conservation, BTO and CEH. Small Tortoiseshell was one of the species badly affected, but numbers recorded were down across the board. Last year’s cold summer and the ongoing deterioration of suitable habitat are seen as causes for the declines.

Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) volunteers contributed to the WCBS, demonstrating how bird surveyors can get involved in butterfly recording, and highlighting the value of dedicated naturalists in our society. Read more in the .
