Blackbird chicks by Susan Waghorn

Blackbird chicks by Susan Waghorn

In 2010, we ran a survey asking people to check their gardens for nesting activity by birds, and the responses have revealed a fascinating picture of the birds that use our gardens for nesting. Nearly 1,300 volunteers took part in the Garden Nesting Survey, and each week recorded any active nests in their garden, which were either being built or contained eggs or chicks.

Which species were most commonly recorded?

When were birds observed nesting?

What were the birds doing?

How did nests fare?

What other patterns did we find?

Results from the 2000 Garden Nesting Survey were published in the journal Bird Study in a paper by Bland et al. (2004). Find out more>>>
