Spring migration update

10 May 2018 Lesser Whitethroat by Jeff Lack

A cool middle and late March put an early brake on migration, with particularly Wheatear and Sand Martin  lagging behind the historical average. However, a warmer spell in mid April aided the arrival of migrants, with Lesser Whitethroat in particular reaching a significantly earlier peak than usual.

The last remaining summer visitors will arrive back this month, most notably Spotted Flycatcher. Although only scarce breeders in Britain and Ireland, it may also be worth listening out for Nightjar and Quail on warm evenings in suitable areas.
