Look out for... Chiffchaff

07 Mar 2018 Chiffchaff by Alex Berryman

With over 1 million breeding pairs, Chiffchaff is one of the most abundant breeding warblers in Britain and Ireland. Most of the population departs in autumn to winter in the Mediterranean basin and west Africa. A small number winter in sheltered spots in southern England and Ireland.

The return passage of Chiffchaff begins in early March, with the historical reporting rate showing the arrival from the second week of the month onwards. Migrant Chiffchaffs can be encountered anywhere, including in gardens, though the best way to find one is to listen for a singing bird.
