Look out for... Arctic waders

13 Sep 2018 Sanderling by Edmund Fellowes/BTO

Early reports indicate that some Arctic-breeding waders may have had a very poor breeding season this year. Sanderling breeding in Greenland seem to have been particularly badly hit with the majority of the population not even attempting to breed due to the late melting of snow.

Looking at the proportion of juveniles in flocks of waders will help in the effort to fully understand the effects of this year's breeding season. You can log these details in the 'Age/sex' submenu of BirdTrack online. If you are unsure about how to determine the age of waders, there is a very good guide to ageing Sanderling, and there are also several identification videos on the BTO YouTube channel.
