Hidden sightings in BirdTrack

20 Jun 2018 Slavonian Grebe by Chris Upson

One of the more frequent enquiries into BirdTrack is why records from certain species do not appear on the recent sightings map on the front page. The 'hidden' records relate to records of species which are rare breeders or are otherwise sensitive to disturbance. This includes species such as Slavonian Grebe, Whooper Swan and Avocet, and the full list of species for which sightings are hidden is shown on our help page.

If you are entering records of these species on BirdTrack, you do not need to do anything to ensure they are hidden. However, there is the option of using the 'Sensitive' button to hide records of species not covered by this list, for example, a sighting of a rarity on private land or other area with no general access.
