Two for the weekend: 2-3 September

01 Sep 2017

Two species to look for this weekend are Pectoral Sandpiper and Tree Pipit.

The reporting rate of Pectoral Sandpiper stands out as it is currently ahead of the historical average based on records on complete lists submitted to BirdTrack. Breeding from north-eastern Siberia to northernmost Canada, this wader is a regular autumn migrant, with records tending to peak in mid September. Since 20 August, more than 60 records have been logged on BirdTrack, contrasting with 42 last year and 55 in 2015.

Tree Pipit reaches its peak reporting rate for the autumn in early September, as they head south for wintering sites in central Africa. The easiest way to find migrant Tree Pipits is to listen for their distinctive high-pitched call. Reporting rates and peak counts for these two species and more can be found in the 'Explore data' page on the global data entry portal.
