Returning Arctic waders

05 Jul 2017 Dunlin by Christine Cassidy

Mid summer may feel like a quiet time for birding, but bird activity and migration is in full swing. Several of the BTO-tagged Cuckoos are already heading south, while the first Arctic-breeding waders such as Knot and Bar-tailed Godwit are starting to arrive back on our shores.

These birds may have only been present on their breeding grounds from early June, so these first returning birds are likely to include failed breeders. These will be joined later in the month by those which have bred successfully, followed by the juveniles in late summer. You can follow the migration of the waders and other migrants on the reporting rate graph.
