Notable Observations feed

07 Mar 2017

For the first time, you can now see and search records that other BirdTrackers have flagged as remarkable, as well as threshold-breaking records in the notable observations feed. To view this new feature, you will need to log in to the global portal and then click on 'Explore data'. If you do not yet have an account, you can sign-up using the simple registration form.

By default, the feed will show the 50 most recent records in the last month. However, there are search options for specific dates, as well as country, region and species. Further, you can narrow down sightings by using the 'Exclude' dropdown menu and see only species not yet noted on your life or year list. The 'Reason' dropdown menu can be used to search for sightings in a specific category. There are six categories by which sightings are filtered for inclusion in the feed:

Local or regional rarity
High count
Unusual date for a migratory species in the region
Few records from area. Automatically generated from data.
National rarity
Record set as remarkable by observer, via 'optional details' online or in the app

The notable observation feed also shows any photos that have been attached to that individual observation. You can enlarge the photo by clicking on it. You can add your own via the optional details form accessed by clicking the '+' button in the global portal online.

The notable observations feed follows the BTO's rare species policy, so details for sensitive species will not appear in the feed. If you have any concerns, you can mark your own sightings as 'sensitive' via the optional details, both online and in the app. If you spot any sightings that feature sensitive species, contain abusive language or errors in location, you can use the 'Report' form to let the BirdTrack team know.
