Leach's Petrels move through

11 Oct 2017 Leach's Petrel by Elliot Monteith

Breeding only on a handful of remote islands off the west coast of Ireland and Scotland, Leach's Petrels are one of the less frequently encountered breeding birds of Britain and Ireland. Away from the breeding sites, the best conditions for seeing this enigmatic species is during autumn storms.

Persistent westerly winds in mid September provided perfect conditions, with almost 30 records logged on 11 September. Peak counts included 80 birds noted at New Brighton, Merseyside and 42 at the Bridges of Ross, Clare. A handful were also noted at inland sites, including Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire
