2016 BTO Online Ringing Report

12 Oct 2017 Manx Shearwater by Sarah Kelman

The annual Online Ringing and Nest Recording Report was published in August and  includes updated totals on the number of birds ringed and the number of nests recorded in Britain and Ireland. The ringing data can be viewed through recovery totals and ringing totals.

The data gathered through ringing provides insight into the longevity of birds. At over 50 years old, a Manx Shearwater ringed on Bardsey in Wales in 1957 still holds the record as the oldest bird in the region. A 10 year old Little Egret and a 37 year old Puffin are just some of the new updates to the longevity records from the last year.
