2016 Breeding Bird Survey

08 Sep 2017 Nuthatch by Alan Brewster

he 2016 Breeding Bird Survey report highlights ongoing declines in the populations of Wood Warbler, Turtle Dove and especially Willow Tit. The latter having declined by an alarming 80% between 1995 and 2015. On the positive side, populations of Chiffchaff and Nuthatch continue to increase, as do those of Tree Pipit in Scotland and Great Spotted Woodpecker in Wales.

Using randomly selected 1-km squares, the Breeding Bird Survey is used to monitor population changes in over 100 bird species breeding in Britain and Northern Ireland using standardised surveying methods. If you know your birds by sight and sound and are interested in taking part, you can get in touch with a local organiser to find an unallocated square.
