Patchwork Challenge supports BirdTrack research

12 Jul 2016 Patchwork Challenge supports BirdTrack research

Patchwork Challenge (PWC) was launched in 2013 to encourage more birders to focus on their local areas. The idea struck a chord and several hundred birders have already got involved. Since it began, PWC has actively encouraged patch-watchers to increase the value of their observations by recording them in BirdTrack. Participants can log and compare how many BirdTrack records and complete lists they’ve submitted; more than 50% of ‘patchers’ use BirdTrack and several have already added more than 1,000 lists in 2016! Last year, an incredible 430,000 records and over 13,000 complete lists were submitted and PWC participants continue to make an important contribution to the BirdTrack dataset.

In 2015, Forest Optics generously agreed to donate £1 for every species recorded collectively by patchers across Britain and Ireland. The final total was 334 species, which Forest Optics and the PWC team kindly rounded up to £350. We’re very pleased to announce that the PWC team have donated this sum to the BirdTrack research appeal, to fund vital research into bird population and distribution trends, habitat use and migration patterns across a range of species throughout the UK and beyond.

We would like to thank both Forest Optics and Patchwork Challenge for this generous donation.
