New Birds of Conservation Concern report highlights declines

Compiled jointly by a number of ornithological and conservation organisations and released last December, the fourth Birds of Conservation Concern report highlights serious declines in the breeding populations of several widespread British birds. New additions to the Red List since 2009 include Merlin, Grey Wagtail and Pied Flycatcher, bringing the total of Red-listed species to 67.

It is not all bad news though. For example, Bittern and Nightjar were downgraded to Amber following successful conservation action. The fortunes of Red Kite continue to improve and it has now been moved to the Green List for the first time. The data on which the lists were based are drawn mainly from structured surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey and the Wetland Bird Survey. Your BirdTrack records help to fill gaps in areas not covered by these surveys and are also of value in monitoring hard-to-survey and non-native species.
