Migration season starting up

06 Sep 2016 Redwing by Gary Loader

With autumn fast approaching, bird migration is well underway as they move from breeding grounds in the north to wintering sites further south. Except for a few late stragglers, Swift and Cuckoo have already left, while Swallow and House Martin will start leaving shortly. Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail and Whinchat also reach their peak reporting rate in early to mid September.

Less familiar migrants such as Meadow Pipit and Kingfisher are also on the move, reaching an average reporting rate of 35% and 10% respectively. Towards the end of September, start listening out for the first  Yellow-browed Warblers and Redwings.
