Focus on... July wader passage

06 Jul 2016 Green Sandpiper by Michael Eccles

One thing to keep an eye out for this month is the passage of waders such as Green and Wood Sandpipers. The first birds begin to appear in mid June, most likely failed breeders. Passage increases through July as adults move south from their breeding grounds and reaches a peak in early August.

Green and Wood Sandpipers can turn up at any wetland area with a shallow muddy margin. With the above average rainfall reported over many regions last month, flooding normally dry fields, there is a good chance that these two species and other migrating waders will turn up at unusual spots this summer.
